WUM FON calls for calm after inter-community violence

• Security forces are trying to bring the situation under control

• Communal tension between Fulani and Aghem is an old problem

• Security forces have been accused of helping the Fulani against the local population

“I want to implore my people to play calmly . Law enforcement has already taken control. They must obey the law. They should take courage and treat those who have been injured”, Fon Bahmbi II called on the population to calm down and let the authorities manage the situation.

The call comes at a time when security forces are struggling to bring the situation under control. In one incident, shots were fired in an effort to repel members of the Aghem community who had staged a protest.
Communal tension between Fulani and Aghem is an old problem that has long been referred to as the farmer-herder conflict.

The Anglophone crisis has only aggravated the only difficult situation in this part of the region.

The security forces have repeatedly been accused of aiding the Fulani against the local population. Reports from Wum indicate that government forces have armed Fulani to help them in their fight against separatist fighters.

According to a civil society activist in Wum whose name we will withhold for security reasons, Mbororo and Fulani were easily drawn into the fight against non-state armed groups because they too suffered at the hands of separatist fighters in Wum .

“Many were killed, their property destroyed, including livestock. Many of them were also kidnapped and huge sums were paid as ransom. Many also sent their cattle seized by the armed men,” he said, adding that “the Mbororos also committed atrocities against the population, including kidnappings for ransom, killings, looting and other forms of destruction”.

It is hoped that the efforts put in place to control the situation will bear the expected fruits and bring peace.
