War in Ukraine: Mexico still refuses to take a position and reiterates its neutrality

While Western countries are urging other countries in the world to take a stand against Russia for the war in Ukraine, Mexico believes that it will not take the side of anyone and asserts its neutrality, Russian news agency TASS reports.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, indicated at a press conference that his country still does not want to give up its neutral position on the conflict in Ukraine. “We adhere to the foreign policy which is enshrined in the constitution. We are of course against interventions, but we do not want to be involved in international conflicts, we have chosen neutrality,” he stressed.

Obrador also reassured that the United States is not putting pressure on Mexico in this matter. “Our position will be the same as before, we are not involved in this war, we want an agreement to be reached,” said the Mexican head of state. This statement comes as he is due to meet his American counterpart Joe Biden next week. A sign that Mexico therefore does not intend to change its position later.

On February 24, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard denounced the presence of Russian armed forces in Ukraine and called for respect for its territorial integrity and an immediate ceasefire. Later, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that his country would not introduce sanctions against Russia. He clarified that Mexico had a neutral position and did not intend to offer its mediation efforts to the negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
