OFFICIAL: Striker Mohamed Salah renews at Liverpool
Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has penned a long term contract at the club, Liverpool confirmed on Friday. The Egyptian is about to begin his sixth season at the Reds.
Liverpool have announced that Mo Salah has signed a new “long-term contract” at Liverpool. The previous deal was due to expire in summer 2023. The 30 year-old Egyptian has been a vital player for Liverpool since joining the club from Roma in 2017 and last season, he shared the Premier League Golden Boot award with Son Heung-Min as they both scored 23 goals in the league. The Egyptian scored 31 in total.
There were rumours of Salah joining Real Madrid after a season which saw Salah win the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and lose the finals of the Champions League and African Cup of Nations, but the Liverpool man has decided to put pen to paper and sign a new deal.
“I feel great and excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone. It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next,” Salah told Liverpool’s website. Liverpool have signed Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay this summer and the Egyptian hinted that these transfers helped him make the decision to stay.
“I think we are in a good position to fight for everything. We have new signings as well. We just need to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and go for everything again.” Salah also talked about how close Liverpool came to a historic quadruple.
“I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going [upwards]. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies,” he said in reference to Man City winning the Premier League title and the defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League title,” he concluded.
Liverpool’s first competitive match of the season is against Man City in the Community Shield on 30th July while they begin their Premier League campaign on 6th August away to Fulham.
