Hostage-taking with the promise of release against payment of a ransom has become increasingly recurrent in Cameroon.

“On the night of April 28 to 29, 2022 around midnight, five individuals, including one armed with an Ak47 type weapon and three armed with hunting weapons and a machete, burst into the Sekehi village, district of Touroua, and took hostage five people aged between 15 and 31. Alerted, the elements of the Gendarmerie Brigade of Touroua set off in pursuit of these presumed criminals who had taken the direction of the forests towards Tcheboa on their way to Mayo-Rey. This pursuit, undertaken with the support of members of the vigilance committees of Touroua, Tcheboa and Tsorke, will make it possible to find the presumed kidnappers in the mountains around 6 p.m. on April 29. They will open fire on the police who will quickly take over”, wrote the gendarmerie.
“The results of this clash show two alleged thugs, aged 23, neutralized, an Ak47 type weapon recovered, as well as a box charger and 16 7.62 caliber ammunition,” she added.
“The five hostages were released and handed over to their respective families after investigation and a medical consultation at the Touroua hospital, under the coordination of the local Sub-Prefect.
