Arsene Wenger: ‘It’s the difference between Messi and Ronaldo’

The Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate is not about to end. It is now around Arsène Wenger to emphasize that the two are on the same level and to affirm that one is an “athlete-footballer” and the other an “exceptional artist”.

Who is better between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo? This question has been the most asked for over a decade now, and both footballers have probably gone beyond their limits. They faced each other on the pitch while respecting each other off it, resulting in a very entertaining decade in the world of football.

To this effect, all footballers and managers have been asked the usual question: who is better between Messi and Ronaldo? Thus, interviewed by SoFoot, the former Arsenal manager said:

“I often say that Cristiano Ronaldo is the athlete-footballer, and Lionel Messi, the exceptional artist, that’s the difference between the two. After all, everyone prefers one or the other. When we love the game, we prefer the artist. The creative makes you discover things that you don’t see, that you haven’t even considered from the stands. It’s (the creative style) finer, although I don’t deny the quality of the Portuguese star. I just believe that football has evolved into the Ronaldo style. This does not mean that the creatives should be eliminated. The rules must evolve to make the game more spectacular, more beautiful to see,” Wenger said.

Also in 2019, Arsene Wenger was asked to comment on the debate, and he hinted that Messi was his choice: “I would say they are so good it’s hard to choose – out of 10 footballers of the year, it’s five and five, so it shows they’re really on the same level. Artistically, Messi is also a player who can give the last ball, so he is perhaps more creative than Ronaldo. Ronaldo is more of a finisher, better in the air, more athletic, and Messi is the more artistic. So basically you are always a bit more tempted by a player like Messi,” he explained.

Besides, Lionel Messi has had a difficult season at PSG by his standards and has only scored six goals in his debut season in Ligue1. For his part, Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Manchester United last season and more or less got away with it.
