ARMY NEWS: CAMEROON SEEKS TO ACQUIRE A DEFENSE INDUSTRY
Army: Cameroon wants to acquire a defense industry
The missions and objectives are those of greater control of the defense economy.
The country has launched a working group set up by Mindef on Wednesday April 5, 2022 in Yaoundé with a view to reducing its dependence on foreign partners.
The working group in charge of developing the military-industrial capabilities of the Defense Forces set up at the Ministry of Defense has an important role to play and should be consistent with the strategic objectives of the National Development Strategy (SND 30). Created on February 9 by the Mindef, this group is made up of all the corps of the Ministry of Defence, with officials from the Minepat alongside them, who will work under the responsibility of General de Corps d´Armée René Claude Meka.
The missions and objectives are those of greater control of the defense economy. It is a question of carrying out migrations not only to ensure the sovereign missions of security, but to become an industrial economic player in the development of the industry as an actor as well as a guide. The objective is that of empowerment and the reduction of ties of dependence. This is in line with the policy of promoting “Made In Cameroon”, which is one of the main orientations of the SND30. By putting them to work, Mindef recommends that the group work in synergy while respecting ideas. “By putting you to work today, a brainstorming that we want to be dynamic, interactive and fruitful, made of intellectual flexibility, a sense of listening and respect for the ideas of others.
In addition to the security and health challenges that challenge Cameroon, the implementation of the National Development Strategy 2030 (SND) challenges all ministerial departments, in particular the Ministry of Defence. For Minepat, beyond its security missions which have a greater impact on economic development, the army could ensure a more pronounced economic franchise. “The army could ensure a more pronounced economic franchise in terms of the economic and social development of the Nation in security”, indicates Alamine Ousmane Mey. Therefore, the reflections of the working group should lead to robust relevant solutions to the needs of the Defense and Security Forces, in particular in the systems of weapons, communications, logistics and various equipment.
The participation of the army in the restructuring of the national economy and the conquest of strategic autonomy for the development of strategies is an imperative. Considerations of sovereignty, autonomy, independence and security in terms of supply, strategic equipment and industrialization are at the heart of the debates here as elsewhere. Faced with the situation that prevails in the military world at present and faced with growing uncertainties with various vulnerabilities, the environment in perpetual change, the use of strategic clarification has proven its worth. A decisive orientation for development is an initiative that should be welcomed with the establishment of this working group.
To reach the milestone of emergence 2035, the government has adopted the National Development Strategy document SND 35, in order to proceed with the transformation of the Cameroonian economy. It is about making changes on the industrial, financial, administrative, social and environmental levels. The goal is to promote strong economic growth.
