AMBAZONIAN ATTACKS: DESERTING TEACHERS THREATENED WITH SACTIONS BY THE SDO OF WUM

The Anglophone crisis is raging in Wum

• The teachers have deserted the classrooms

• The prefect will crack down

Several teachers have fled the fighting in the locality of Wum, Menchum department, in the North West region. Several of them were killed and others taken hostage. Despite the threat hanging over these teachers, the prefect of Wum did not fail to send an appeal to return to the classrooms. In a press release, Abdoulaihou Aliou, the prefect of the department of Wum (North-West region) asks teachers from public establishments absent from their posts in his command unit to return to classrooms before January 18. “It should be noted that advanced insecurity as a reason for absence will not be justified by a prefectural decree”. According to the prefect, “peace (has been) found”.

Having noted that his appeal had fallen on deaf ears, the prefect Abdoulaihou Aliou returned to the charge, instructing the four sub-prefects of his department to carry out raids on schools in order to ensure teachers have returned to class. The sub-prefects are also responsible for noting the names of “recalcitrant” teachers so that disciplinary measures can be taken against them.
As a reminder, in November 2021, five of the largest English-speaking teachers’ unions denounced violence against schools in the North West and South West regions. They issued a “strong and urgent” appeal to the parties in conflict to say that “pupils, students, teachers and parents must not be persecuted and subjected to pain, fear, uncertainty and even death. in their quest to acquire and provide an education.

The North West region has been plagued by a separatist conflict since 2017. Armed separatist militias kidnap and murder many officials in this part of the country. This insecurity has pushed state agents to flee their posts, despite the authorities’ calls to order and threats.
