The Sawa people expressed their displeasure on Friday May 20, 2022, while the the whole country had its eyes fixed on the civil and military parade of the National Unity Day. As she announced a few hours earlier, the community came out to express their displeasure with the expropriations of which they are victims.


The Sawa daughters and sons met to demonstrate on the destroyed lands of Dikolo. They want justice to be done and the government to order an end to evictions.
Dressed in black, the Sawa men and women condemned the “brutal, illegal, irregular and unjust” destruction of the homes of the people of Dikolo, Bali, in the Canton Bell in Douala. Indeed, it is since Saturday May 14, 2021 that an operation to evict populations has been taking place at a place called Bali Dikolo. It is still ongoing. For the Sawa community, everything is very clear in their heads. She wants to make May 20 a black day. Residents then called for people to dress in traditional black attire.
A demolition operation is underway in Dikolo, under the eyes of the Sawa people who are trying as much as possible to resist the massive destruction and expropriations for the construction of the Marriott hotel.
“Following the brutal, illegal, irregular and unjust evictions and destruction of the homes of the people of Dikolo, Bali, Bell Township in Douala, the Bonanjo Sons, Daughters and Wives Collective calls on the entire Sawa Community to make May 20 a black day,” wrote the populations concerned in a published press release.
This expropriation operation is not to the taste of the Sawa people who feel threatened: “We declare that the day of May 20, 2022 is a dark day. Everyone, Sawa daughters, sons and wives, everyone in black on May 20… It’s black May 20. Traditional black dress”.
